Marking National Day

The Young PAP would like to wish all members a very happy National Day. We hope the spirit of National Day will be deeply ingrained in the hearts of many. In this issue, we share with you two of our events for the community- highlighting the spirit of the Young PAP in serving Singaporeans.

CARRYING THE YP FLAG HIGH
By Jonathan Hoe, YP Tampines North Branch

When I was approached to take part in this year’s NDP under the PAP Contingent representing the Young PAP, I was very enthusiastic about it. And the enthusiasm did not disappoint. What an unforgettable experience it’s been!

Many months were spent “burning” our Saturdays to perfect the drills. Our contingent is made up of people from all walks of life it is the love for Singapore that brings us together every week as one contingent.

I remembered after the parade, it was just the beginning of our 2.4km City March. As we were marching back along Marina Bay Sands for the pledge moment with our fellow Singaporeans, spectacular display of fireworks orchestrated to the “In A Heartbeat” music. While taking our pledge and national anthem with pride at the Marina Bay Cityscape, I stand in awe thinking how Singapore had transformed from a humble beginning as a fishing village 46 years ago to a magnificent metropolitan city. This year’s National Day theme, ‘Majulah! The Singapore Spirit’ encapsulates our common determination to overcome all odds and achieve success for our Nation. I want to say indeed my heart beats with you, Singapore!

What the Young Want of our Future Leaders Thoughts from A/Prof Ho Peng Kee:

We find out what some of our Members of Parliament have to say about what the future electorate expect of our young leaders-

Firstly, sincerity and a strong desire to help fellow Singaporeans and the less fortunate worldwide.

Good communication skills, both face to face and online, is key.

Espousing values and interests that the young can identify with - such as an interest in the arts or sports, especially as a participant; travelling, especially to non-traditional places and meeting people from diverse backgrounds; loyalty to group, can "hang loose" with friends yet remain responsible in actions would allow for sincerity in actions to permeate.

Finally, one's track record in school, during the tertiary years and early working life, would increasingly be scrutinized very carefully.

In short, one must walk the talk.

12,000 Rice Dumplings for the Less-Fortunate
By Lydia Quah, YP Community

Marking the annual Rice Dumpling Festival in June 2011, the Buddhist charity, Man Fatt Tong Welfare Society planned a Charity Dumpling Making drive to share the festive joy with the less privileged across Singapore. YP Community came on board to support this meaningful event with a near total of 100 YP comrades, friends and families taking part in this endeavour.

The aim- 10,000 rice dumplings for the elderly and the less fortunate.

On June 4, a sheltered corner at Kovan Hub became a mini rice dumpling factory. It buzzed with activity as hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers made rice dumplings for the elderly in all parts of Singapore. YP volunteers were involved in different departments of the rice dumpling factory such as cooking, wrapping, steaming and cutting the ingredients. Our volunteers were transformed into “human dumpling robots!” Our volunteers had fun and enjoyed themselves in the making of the rice dumplings.

One of our YP volunteers in the “Cooking Department”, William Wee, exclaimed, ‘This is my first time frying, and frying such a large quality of rice!’. It took not 1 but 2 able bodies to continually toss the pre-washed and soaked glutinous rice in a huge wok while an experienced chef added the spices for taste. It was hard work, but I have fun in the midst of it and might have revealed my potential of becoming a cook some day! All in all, the volunteers made a whopping 12,710 rice dumplings.

On June 5, the “factory” was transformed into a restaurant. 500 elderly were invited to a brunch at the ‘restaurant’. Volunteers helped in preparing the vegetarian buffet, ushering of the elderly to their seats, distributing goodie bags to the participants, while more volunteers hopped into taxis and cars to bring the freshly made rice dumpling to homes of needy elderly across Singapore. The elderly at Kovan enjoyed some performances while having the vegetarian buffet that the volunteers had prepared. One of our YP volunteers, Josephine, brought her husband and two sons aged 9 and 13 years old to help out in this activity. Josephine said that she wanted her sons to experience and differentiate the feeling of being served and serving people, the joy of volunteering and most importantly the joy of talking to the elderly. Indeed, no joy can equate to the joy of serving others with sincerity and love.

The quiet smiles from the elderly and the refilling of their plates with the rice dumplings made by the volunteers was the most rewarding part of this entire drive. I am glad to be part of the YP contingent in this event.

YP Visits the Children’s Aid Society (Melrose Home)

With the help of Youth United by Passion activists (YUP!) Members, YP organized a visit to the Children’s Aid Society on February 5, 2011 to spread some festive cheer to the children in the home. A total of 21 volunteers attended to play games and create artwork with the children for the afternoon. Besides ice-breaker games and expressing their creativity, each child also enjoyed a pizza snack, a goody bag and lots of happy memories of ‘big brothers and sisters’ who played with them for the afternoon.

This event drew like-minded YP and potential YP members together. The volunteers got to know each other and it certainly was an effective bonding session! Many have expressed that they would like to be in the know when other such community events organized by YP take place.
