We understand some people have taken issue with Minister Shanmugam’s comments on the death penalty. We would like to clarify some facts on this.

On 9 May 2010 Minister Shanmugam attended a dialogue session held at Siglap South. One of the members of the audience raised a question to Mr Shanmugam on whether there will there be any legislative changes to the mandatory death penalty, in light of the recent press coverage on Yong Vui Kong case.

In his reply, Minister Shanmugam commented on the Government’s policy on the death penalty. He mentioned to Yong Vui Kong’s case since the question raised it. However, he did not express his opinion on the merits of any of the legal issues or evidence that was being heard before the court.

He also did not comment on the constitutional issues that were being considered before the Court of Appeal. He simply made a defence of the policy on retaining the mandatory death penalty since that was the question asked.

We see nothing wrong with this as he was giving a direct answer to the question that was asked.
