Listening to the Prime Minister’s National Day Rally, with its strong emphasis on education, it brought to mind a recent conversation I had with a friend regarding education in general and education systems in particular.

According to the Guardian newspaper, the Beijing Olympic Games cost £20 billion or about SG$43 billion. International Olympic Committee President, Mr Jacques Rogge described the Beijing Olympic Games as "truly exceptional games". Singapore spent SG$387 million on the Singapore Youth Olympic Games (SYOG). Mr Jacques Rogge said: "I always knew it would be well organized, but I did not expect this level of perfection. I now have 22 Olympic Games under my belt but (Singapore) ranks at the very top." These words reflected the success of the SYOG despite a smaller budget.

Consider this – you have just been diagnosed with a heart attack at the hospital A&E department. What questions would the interviewing doctor ask you? Chances are, the doctor would want to find out whether or not there are risk factors predisposing you to heart attacks, such as a past history of heart attacks, high blood pressure, high blood choflesterol, unhealthy dietary habits, lack of frequent exercise and high levels of work stress.

Certainly one of the most ‘sizzling’ topics this National Day period concerns immigration. We see large numbers of foreign workers and professionals, or foreign ‘talents’, and Permanent Residents who now occupy a significant percentage of our population, so much so that some born-and-bred Singaporeans are feeling threatened by their presence.

When I first heard that the Youth Olympic Games were going to be held in Singapore, I must admit that the sceptic in me questioned the wisdom behind hosting an event that seemed out of the ordinary alongside the other events that Singapore has hosted thus far.
